Representation and Complying with the law
Legal and Industrial Affairs(LIA)
Recognised as the best Industrial Relations departments in the hospitality industry, the LIA department provides timely and accurate information in relation to human resources issues; on the phone or in person.
When it comes to legal and compliance issues, initial advice is provided as a benefit of membership. For more complex legal issues the team is on hand to put you in contact with a panel of specialist legal practitioners.
Liquor and Policing Issues
Effective relationships with government agencies including; NSW Police, (both local licensing and Alcohol Licensing Enforcement Command), Liquor and Gaming and local council is an essential component in running your business.
The Liquor & Policing Department has specific expertise and can provide information and advocacy on a range of liquor licensing and policing issues, from membership-wide memos on issues affecting the industry to advice and assistance on individual breaches of liquor licensing laws, attendance at liquor accords, facilitation of meetings to build relationships or negotiating through the violent venues process.
The media cycle is more than ever a 24/7 business. The Association provides a strong and united industry voice to the media on all issues affecting hotels. If an AHA NSW member finds themselves involved in a critical incident then our experts are there to advise on the best way to work with the media, the police or other authorities.
Benefits at a glance
enableHR FOR AHA NSW – Employee Management Tool
Purpose built for members, enableHR provides member venues with a tailor-made HR management system specific to participants in the hospitality industry. The system contains resources such as fact sheets, awards, wage rates and over 100 template contracts, letters, best practice guides and policies.
Through enableHR for AHA NSW, every member has their own dedicated, confidential portal of resources to assist them to better understand and comply with the Fair Work Act 2009, the Hospitality Industry (General) Award 2010 (HIGA) – as well as generally improve the way they do business and avoid costly and time consuming claims.
Workers Compensation Insurance – HEM
The AHA NSWs partnership with Employers Mutual brings members workers compensation insurance through Hotel Employers Mutual (HEM). This is available only to members and continues to provide a one stop specialist service, securing fast responses and competitive pricing on your premiums.
Included with your policy is ‘HEM Safe’, a generic Work Health and Safety Management System tailored to the hotel industry. Access to ‘HEM Safe’ is free for hotels insured with Hotel Employers Mutual. Another benefit of HEM is access to their critical incident support service, an essential tool in providing counselling to staff involved in traumatic incidents including armed holdups.
Self-Exclusion and Problem Gambling Support
Members who have gaming have access and participation into the Gamecare MVSE program ensuring they meet the mandatory requirement under the Gaming Machines Act 2001 (NSW).
The multi-venue self-exclusion system is an online system that revolutionises self-exclusion by allowing problem gamblers to ban themselves from venues at a counsellor’s office, rather than having to attend a venue at all. Gamecare MVSE is widely regarded as the best service for those in need of assistance.
Members with Pub TAB / Sky facilities are eligible for significant rebates under the current memorandum of understanding between AHA NSW and Tabcorp.
AHA NSW members receive a rebate to offset Sky Channel costs, which is paid monthly in arrears – and for most members actually exceeds their AHA NSW subscription.
Members also receive a full rebate on the Trackside product. Last year AHA NSW members received over $8 million dollars in TAB rebates. Non- AHA NSW members are not eligible for these rebates.
The Annual Awards for Excellence
The AHA NSW Awards for Excellence are recognised as the most prestigious awards in the hospitality industry. Members are automatically eligible to enter into the annual awards.
By entering you will receive a report about your business that you can use to either make changes or reward your hard-working staff. Becoming a finalist in the awards opens your business up to many media, marketing and promotional opportunities.
The awards range from best cocktail/lounge bar, best specialty/emerging bar, best innovative wine list, best promotional concepts, best social media activity, bartender of the year, plus a range of awards focusing on restaurant, dining and refurbishment categories along with many other industry awards.

Through our regular email member updates, monthly magazine Hotel News and state wide sub branch meetings members are kept up to date and informed on a wide range of issues affecting their business.
Training and Education
AHA NSW has partnered with William Angliss Institute (WAI) to provide nationally recognised training to members. This partnership provides members access to accredited, industry-leading training from compliance courses to management offerings. These courses are delivered at the WAI state of the art training facilities in Surry Hills by industry experts.

AHA NSW membership runs calendar year 1 January – 31 December. Membership is non-refundable but can be transferred to the incoming Employer of Labour in circumstances of a change in ownership or Employer of Labour. For further information click here.
