AHA (NSW) Security Division

For hotels, there are traditionally two methods of engaging trained and licensed security officers – sub-contract a licensed security firm or obtain a Master Security Licence and directly employ trained and licensed security officers. With the current shortage of appropriately qualified security officers, the increased cost of contracting a firm and the problems associated with being sent security officers that don’t know you or your clientele, obtaining your own Master Licence and employing your own security personnel is a better business option.

Currently, the Security Industry Act 1997 requires that to obtain a Master Security Licence, you must be a member of an approved industry organisation. The AHA (NSW) is one of 10 such organisations across New South Wales and is the only one specifically established for hotels.

To obtain your Master Security Licence, financial AHA (NSW) members must also join and remain financial members of the AHA (NSW) Security Division. The cost of this is $330 (including GST) per year that comprises the cost of AHA (NSW) having a comprehensive security audit undertaken, which is a requirement once in the five-year period under Legislation.

Once you apply to become a member of the Security Division, an invoice will be generated and sent out to you. Once paid, you will receive a certificate from the AHA (NSW) confirming your membership of an Approved Security Organisation. A copy then needs to be included with your Master Licence application form. As a Master Security licensee, you have to comply with the Industry Code of Conduct and relevant legislation/regulations.

Click here to apply for your Master Licence by completing the application form available.

Alternatively, contact the Security Licensing Enforcement Directorate (SLED) on 1300 362 001.

The cost of obtaining a Master Licence for a five-year period depends on the number of security staff you employ during the term of the Licence. Once you have received your application form, you then need to fill in all the relevant information and include a copy of the AHA (NSW) certificate along with any other documentation and send it back to SLED. The application form includes detailed information on the licence holder and the businesses close associates. It takes approximately six weeks to process your application and until you are approved you cannot employ any security staff and will need to outsource.

All staff that you employ for security must be appropriately licensed and have completed the Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) course. The AHA (NSW) Training Department regularly conducts RSA courses and can be contacted on 1800 100 047.
